Introduction:

Department of orthopaedics at Government Medical College, Nagpur is one of central India’s biggest orthopedics departments. The department is headed by professor Dr Sumedh Chaudhary. The department has 12 faculty posts which include 1 professor, 4 associate professors and 7 assistant professors divided into 4 units who conduct teaching programs for postgraduates, undergraduates and paraclinical students. We have four separate wards with total 130 beds. We have fully dedicated operation theatre with 2 modular & 2 semi-modular operation tables.

We have postgraduate course (M.S. Ortho) in which every year nine students get admitted. Facilities provided by our department are fracture clinic, spine clinic, arthroscopy sports medicine clinic, arthroplasty clinic & paediatric orthopaedic clinic. We have VR based training modules for arthroscopy training of residents. We have research publications in various indexed journals. GMC Nagpur orthopedics department is MUHS certified center for Arthroplasty fellowship.

Our department is one of the best in central India to learn orthopaedics and serves as a major tertiary referral centre conducting in excess of 2500 surgeries including speciality surgeries like Joint replacement, Spine, Arthroscopy & sports medicine.

Workshop/CME/Conference

NAGPUR TRAUMA COURSE ‘23

1st ever Nagpur Trauma Course (NTC) was conducted from 1-3rd April 2023 at Nagpur. More than 500 delegates from across the country participated in the conference. Faculty from the Department of Orthopaedics at GMC Nagpur actively participated in the event.

on 1st April the cadaveric course was held in which professor & Head Dr. Sumedh Chaudhary showcased the unique and highly effective Three window approach for coronal shear fractures of the elbow. Dr Pankaj Tathe guided the delegates by demonstrating the complex Frosch Approach to the posterolateral tibial plateau. Table demonstrators Dr Abhinav Jogani, Dr Nilesh Sakharkar & Dr Kuber Sakhare actively helped in the smooth conduct of the cadaveric course.

On 2nd April, live surgeries were conducted at GMC Nagpur which were relayed to the conference venue. Treatment of a complex intra articular fracture of distal humerus by bicolumnar plating was superbly demonstrated by Dr Sumedh Chaudhary. A complicated proximal humerus fracture was operated by PHILOS plating by Dr Manish Kawade.
Dr Pankaj Thate demonstrated the classical and forgotten art of k-wiring of Distal end radius fracture while plating of complex distal femur fracture was ably demonstrated by Dr Pruthviraj Nistane.

On 3rd April table workshops led by these experts were held. The difficult topic of terrible triad was extensively explained by Dr Sumedh & Dr Tathe which was very well appreciated by the delegates.

With an impressive turnout of over 500 delegates, the NTC proved to be an outstanding success, providing invaluable educational opportunities and enhancing the knowledge and skills of all participants.

 

 

Bone & Joint Day

On August 4, 2023, the Department of Orthopaedics at GMC Nagpur celebrated Bone and Joint Day, dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of maintaining healthy bones and joints. The program featured a notable initiative where Bone mineral Density testing was conducted for all patients to assess osteoporosis levels, and calcium and vitamin D supplements were provided to those with scores below normal levels. Osteoporosis is known as the silent killer. With the prophylactic screening many pts were diagnosed to be osteoporotic although they didn't have any complaints whatsoever. Corrective pharmacological therapy was started for them and they were educated on the need for regular check up and compliance with treatment.
In addition to this, patients were educated on fundamental exercises that promote bone health and help prevent osteoporosis. The event was graced by Honourable Dean Dr Raj Gajbhiye sir and the Medical Superintendent Dr Sharad Kuchewar sir, the master of ceremony was Dr Abhinav Jogani and it concluded with a warm Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Sumedh Chaudhary, highlighting the department's commitment to promoting bone and joint health in the community.

 

 

World Arthritis Day

 

On October 12, 2023, the Department of Orthopaedics at Government Medical College (GMC), Nagpur, orchestrated a memorable World Arthritis Day celebration that aimed to raise awareness about various forms of arthritis and their treatments. The event featured educational videos in the local language, informative pamphlets on arthritis prevention, interactive sessions with medical experts, and a heartfelt closing message of gratitude from Dr. Karan Lakhani under guidance of Dr Sumedh Chaudhary sir, emphasizing the department's commitment to promoting public health and empowering individuals in their fight against arthritis. This comprehensive initiative showcased the department's dedication to improving the lives of those affected by arthritis and its commitment to preventive healthcare.

World Spine Day

The department of orthopaedics GMC Nagpur celebrated the *World Spine Day* on 16th October '23.
This year the Theme is *MOVE YOUR SPINE*. This 2023 campaign calls on people to care for their spines by staying active. Evidence has shown that immobility and a lack of physical activity are contributors to spinal pain and disability. “Move Your Spine” encourages people of all ages, in all nations, to get active and support their spinal health through movement. An estimated one billion people suffer with spinal pain with 540 million people at any one time. Low back pain remains the leading cause of years lived with disability on the planet.
Spinal pain and disability are more prevalent than cancer, stroke, heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s Disease combined.

The program involved spreading awareness among the general public about various spinal disorders and the treatment modalities. There were various educative videos in vernacular language that were shown throughout the duration of OPD for the general public.
Thereafter we conducted a CME on low back pain in the department of orthopaedics.
The MOC for the program was Dr Abhinav Jogani. There was an inaugural speech by Professor & HOD Dr Sumedh Chaudhary who emphasized the importance of appropriate management of Low back pain. There was an elaborate talk on *Approach to Low Back Pain* patients by Dr Kiran Dhole. He outlined the algorithm which is useful in analysing the low back pain patients who present to the OPD. This was followed by an astute talk on *Clinical examination of Spine* by Dr Kuber Sakhare. He exhaustively outlined the various tests which are pertinent in establishing a clinical diagnosis of patients which ultimately helps in preparing a management plan for the patient.
Finally we had a talk on *Ergonomics & Rehabilitation of Patients* by OT lecturer Dr Minakshi Sawarkar. She elaborated on the various treatment modalities and management plans employed by the OT department for rehabilitation of patients.
There was a healthy discussion after the talks on various other related topics. The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Abhinav Jogani.

 

 

Bone and Joint Day - 4th August 2022 

In the view of “AZADI KA AMRIT MAHOTSAV” and 4th august 2022 being celebrated as Bone and Joint day,Department of Orthopaedics had organised Free Bone Mineral Density Check up camp for awareness of general public about bone health and diseases.
The Event was organised with dr rajkondawar Medical superitendent gmc nagpur as the chief guest. The camp started with initiall information about various diseases by the department faculty in orthopaedics OPD 65, GMCH, Nagpur.
Dr sumedh chaudhary Professor and Head, Department of orthopaedics explained about the signs symptoms and ill effects of osteopenia and osteoporosis
Dr Rajkondawar highlighted the importance of bone health in these times of increasing longevity.
A postive response by the locals of nagpur with an attendance of 161 In the camp was received. All attending patients were examined, screend using BMD machine and were adviced treatment accordingly.
The whole ocassion was a success with a huge response by the patients and the staff.

Awards & Achievements

Dr. Pratik Sunil Tawri achieved a significant milestone by presenting a Gold Medal paper at IAACON 2023 in Young Surgeons Forum held at Chandigarh in October 2023. His paper, titled "Arthroplasty Surgical Checklist - A Step Towards Perfection Through Protocols," received recognition from both national and international faculties. The research paper was selected among the top 5 papers presented at the conference.
