The Department of Surgery was started functioning in the year 1948.
Dr. Ramesh Nigam (1948-1960) was the first Professor and Head of department of surgery . Subsequently Dr. D.S. Deodhar (1960-1963) , Dr. V.G. Gharpure (1963-1964) , Dr. C. Balakrishnan (1964-1965) , Dr.kalke (1965-70) , Dr.V.Marwah (1970-79) , Dr. M.L. Gandhe (1979-84) Dr N.K. Deshmukh (1984-90 , Dr. S.R. Joharpurkar (1990-91) Dr. V.N. Sagdeo(1991-93) , Dr. B.P. Deshraj (1993-94) , Dr. A.M. Bhole (1994-95) , Dr. V.N. Sagdeo (1995-2007) , Dr S.P.Matkari (2007-2014) , Dr. B.B. Gupta (4-8-14-5-9-14) , Dr. Raj .N. Gajbhiye (6-9-14 to 29-9-22).
Currently Dr. Brajesh Gupta is PROFESSOR & HEAD OF DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY, INCHARGE OF UNIT 2 SURGERY, HAVING SOPD ON TUESDAY. His keen interest in Advanced gastrointestinal laparoscopic surgery and oncology surgery.
The current admission strength of M.S. General Surgery POST GRADUATE SEATS is 22 per year and the Degree recognised by Medical Council of India in 1971.
Department has four fellowship course recognised by MUHS
1) Fellowship in Minimal access surgery
2) Fellowship in Emergency and Trauma
3) Fellowship in Colorectal Surgery
4) Fellowship in hepatopancreaticobiliary surgery
Department has 8 units with specialised Burn UNIT & Burn ward.There are 8 dedicated operation theatres with four fully integrated Modular OTs with advanced laparoscopy and Bariatric Surgery operative sets. Department conducts various speciality clinics such as Gastro-intestinal surgery & laparoscopy unit, Breast clinic,Obesity clinic and Hernia clinic,coloproctology clinic..
Department receives patients from Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Andra Pradesh.Department conducts various diagnostic and operative camps and workshops.
Department has various Research paper and Publication in National and International journals.Department of surgery conducts operative workshop and CME in OT F and Masicon Hall in GMC Nagpur regularly for best patient management , upgradation of knowledge of postgraduates in surgery and undergraduate students .There is exposure for advanced anaesthesia management to their postgraduates and also nursing staff in Operation Theatre.

2. Organised fellowship courses in Minimal access Surgery F.I.A.G.E.S. including course
conduct/ training/ examination/operative workshop operating Basic and Advanced laparoscopic surgery.
3. Surgery department organised diagnostic / operative workshop under MAHA AROGYA SHAHYA CHIKITSA SHIBIR and operated more than 100 patients from Vidarbha region.

6. Organised Wound Management Seminar.
7.Department organized a VATS (video assisted thoracoscopy )workshop in OT F on 15 December 2018 , showing advanced laparoscopy management in complicated lung pathology ,Decorticatation, organised retractable haemothorax, cancer Oesophaus middle 1/3 to be managened by MIS successfuly by Renowned Thoracoscopic surgeon Dr. Sawarana from Tamilnadu and Dr.. Raj Gajbhiye ,Head of Department surgery GMC Nagpur as faculty.
8.Skill lab course conducted for postgraduates ,faculties from surgery and Obstetrics Gynacolgical Dept in Gmc nagpur through Jonson and Jonson division by providing Mobile van service with well equipped skill lab for open and Laparoscopic knotting and suturing techniques with educational videos for correct learning on 3 January to 5 January 2019 for whole day 9am-5 pm near Dean Office premises.
9.Department conducted a Bariatric workshop and CME in various types of Bariatric procedures including RyGB, sleeve, mini gastric bypass ,banding procedures successfuly performed for five obese patients, free of cost in Govt schemes by renowned Bariatric surgeon Dr. Mohit Bhandari from Indore and Dr. Raj Gajbhiye, Head of Department surgery GMC Nagpur on 19 January 2019 followed by CME.
10. Department conducted Live Operative workshop on Laparoscopic and open Hernia repairs on 30th July 2022. Surgeries were live performed by Dr Jignesh Gandhi.
11. Live operative workshop was conducted in 15th July 2023 where variety of cases of malignancies, colorectal , bariatric surgery were operated upon by renowned faculties Dr Shailesh Puntambekar, Dr Muffazal Lakdawala and Dr Roy Patankar followed by CME in OT F and MASICON Hall.
12. Platinum Jubilee Celebration - CME was conducted on "Wound healing made easy by Dr Sandeep Naphade" and "Head injury : Bread & Butter or Headache by Dr Pramod Giri" under the chairmanshipship of Dr B.B. Gupta with grand felicitation of Senior teachers at the hands of our Respected Dean , Dr Raj Gajbhiye on 09/12/2023.
13. Department of General Surgery in association with Vidarbha Surgeon's Association conducted the 5th conference of VSACON at Oval Garden GMCH Nagpur on 5,6,7 January 2024 under the able guidance of Dr Raj Gajbhiye, Dr Brajesh Gupta and many other faculties of the department.
14. Department of General Surgery in association with ASN and NOGS conducted an operative workshop on 20th July 2024 in which cases of oncology like carcinoma rectum, carcinoma cervix were operated by Dr Raj Gajbhiye and Guest faculty Dr Shailesh Puntambekar. A benign case Peptic Stricture with gastric outlet obstruction was operated robotic assisted by Dr Raj Gajbhiye.
1. Post Graduate Residents, Dr Swapnil Prasad , Dr Subodh Behera and Dr Yash Jain from Department of General Surgery participated in trauma quiz conducted at AIIMS Nagpur in the month of October 2023 and bagged first prize.
2. Post Graduate Students from the department brought laurels from ASICON 2023 held at Vishakhapatnam.
